Happy Monday! Beaches, birthdays & some Richarding

Standard

OK, I had such good intentions. I was going to DVR the rest of the shows I watch on Sunday nights and try to get to sleep on the early side. Instead, it’s 1:05 a.m. and I am still awake. I watched all six of the shows–suspense and surprise plot twists, humor, pathos, sweet romance–and thoroughly enjoyed it all.  I just have one question–why do so many of the shows I like end up on the same night??  *sigh*

I have a lot I want to do tomorrow if all goes well, and it may mean not a lot of time spent Richarding. We shall see. Also, remember my post about wanting to be at the beach but with nice fall weather? Well, I am getting my wish.

Lovely Orange Beach. Imagine Benny and I sitting there hand in hand like that. Awwwwwww . . .

This weekend we are going down to Foley/Orange Beach to my sister and BIL’s and I am staying down there for the entire week, with Benny returning to pick me up the following weekend. My oldest sister is also coming down for a few days so we three musketeers will all be together again–and not for a sad occasion.  As you get older, you realize what a plus that is.

And it’s Benny’s birthday on the 20th, so we are all going to celebrate together. My Foley sister (who is the sweetest woman in the world. I kid you not) is going to make Benny a German Chocolate cake.

A yummy-looking German Chocolate Cake. It doesn’t get its name from any connection to the country of Germany. The people who owned the chocolate making business had a very reliable employee whose last name was German. When they developed a new type of chocolate, they named it in honor of Mr. German. It’s a chocolate cake with a cooked frosting featuring pecans and coconut and it’s quite delicious.

So I have something fun to look forward to. Benny is taking today and tomorrow off to do some much-needed trimming of hedges, etc. and other chores while the weather is nice.

And now— some Richard Armitage eye candy to round things out, ladies and gents. :D

  1. Your plans sound wonderful!! I love the thought of you and Benny at Orange Beach. You owe it to yourselves to enjoy.

It’s true, as we get older, we see dear ones for sad occasions. I’m so glad this one will be happy. A German chocolate cake — oh, my! You know Sir Guy will want to share.

All this leading up to Benny’s birthday on the 20th, Wow. He may not want a lot of fuss, but how about a little fuss, just for him?

    • Yes, I am certain Sir Guy will feel the need to sample the cake. It’s right up his alley. ;) I have to make a least a little fuss with Benny. He’s so deserving of it, you know. :D

  2. Meanwhile, if you send Ricky over for a cup of joe, let him know I’ve got a fresh pot of coffee and I’ll have an apple pie coming out of the oven soon…

  3. I hope you have a wonderful time with your sisters and Benny! Wow, Benny was almost born on the same day as me? So you’re married to a fellow Libra? :) German Choc cake sounds absolutely yummy! You watched 6 (six) shows one after the other? Wasn’t that a bit of an overload? ;)

    • That’s right, your birthdays are just a day apart! :D And yes, we are both Libras; I am an “early” one and he is a “late” one. ;) German Chocolate cake is really delicious. Great with a big glass of skim milk or a cup of Joe (with Ricky Deeming!). As for the six shows–thank goodness they do have a few minutes at the end of each ep to do promos as that allowed me to go to the bathroom, etc. I couldn’t pause stuff because that would have put me behind and everything wasn’t on the same channel . . . but three different ones. I didn’t want to miss anything.

  4. You are going to spend a week at Orange Beach?! Ok, I’m officially green with envy. Orange Beach and Gulf Shores were my favorite places to go when I lived in Mobile. I always went to the Shrimp Festival and the art festival and to the lovely little zoo in Gulf Shores. I know you are going to have a wonderful time visiting and playing in the ocean. I’ve never seen sunsets like the have there, all pastels. And the Gulf water is the most amazing shade of aqua. Sigh…

I can’t top your 6 hour marathon. I spent yesterday watching Harry and Geraldine. “You owe me one kiss…with tongue.” :) Is it just me or is it getting warm in here?

    • It’s lovely, isn’t it?? Most people don’t know we actually have beaches in Alabama, but we do and they are really pretty ones. Lots of cool shops and great restaurants, too. We will be in Orange Beach part of the time and at their Foley house the rest of the time.

I love walking on the beach late in the day, shoes off and toes squishing in the sand and surf, the scent of salt in the air, the sound of the water rolling in . . . and you are right, the sunsets can be spectacular. I am taking my camera so I hope to get some good shots.

Their condo also has a big balcony and it’s fun sitting out there drinking coffee in the morning, or eating a meal or just relaxing on the chaise with a good book and watching the sailboats and catching those Gulf breezes.

    • It’s a lovely area. They get lots of snowbirds during the winter. I am looking forward to it, as it’s been a while since I’ve had a little vacay. And that cake does look yummy, doesn’t it?? ;)

  5. I forgot to mention the lovely lovely photo from Cold Feet. It is exquisite. I hope it’s ok that I saved it for viewing later. I don’t know what you did to it, but the effect is very romantic.

    • I am so glad you liked it. Any time anyone wants to snaffle any of my artwork I am fine with that. If you want to share it at another site, all I ask is for credit–by fedoralady. After all, if you do something creative, you want it to be seen/heard/read and enjoyed, right?

As for the photo, I used numerous overlays on the pic at the Pixlr site in an effort to give a wash effect of soft pastel colors. I was quite pleased with it myself. :D

  6. Have a great time away enjoying time with your sisters. The cake looks great , lots of work to make one from scratch but oh so good. I am surprised that the boys have not asked for a german chocolate cake for there birthdays in a while. I just made a chocolate fudge cake from a new cookbook that my friend from England sent for my birthday this year. It was for son 2s best friend who has a birthday this week. Last year they had to move out of state so his parents could find jobs, they where home for the weekend . I made him the cake and his favorite supper fish and chips with malt vinegar.
It is nice to have a change of pace, so enjoy the beach and fun time with your family. As for six hours of telly, I most likely would too if it was a good night for it. Saturday night is my good night for lots of great british telly on our PBS station.

    • My mother used to make the most fabulous from-scratch German chocolate cakes. Moist and delicious. It was a popular choice amongst we three girls for our birthday cakes–that and yellow layer cake with chocolate icing. My sister is also a fabulous cook, so no doubt Benny’s cake will be equally delish.

Yes, I think a change of scenery and pace will be nice for a few days. And getting to catch up with my sisters will be nice. :D

      • As a only child I have always wondered what it would be like to have a sibling or two. I do know that some families don’t always get on, but I can still wonder. I also got a great recipe for a yellow cake with chocolate frosting. I always make my cakes and frosting from scratch. Pretty soon I will be making my Christmas fruitcake so it can get feed and be ready in a couple months. MIL really likes fruitcake and so did my late mom.

        • Here, cake mix in a box is relatively unknown, so I use my scratch recipes. I have to tweak the American recipes because the European ingredients don’t behave the same way, and I have had arguments with my oven about a steady temperature, bit I finally got a decent Victoria sponge and an apple pie. I usually start my Christnas cakes on All Saints Day, but I may be late starting because I’ll have to go to Gibraltar for the ingredients, if they’re available at all. I may have to use a different recipe…

          • There are a series of cookbooks by an author originally from Alabama. She uses mixes and convenience foods and adds other ingredients to give them a from-scratch, homemade taste. Benny uses her Cake Doctor cookbook quite often. He just whipped up a cake that he actually improvised using a chocolate cake mix, adding pudding, chocolate chips, Kahlua and pecans. It’s moist, flavorful and so delicious.

            • Sounds fabulous!! I have been known to trick out a devil’s food mix to become a Black Forest cake. Just love the dark chocolate and the sour cherries with kirsch, all tied together with real whipped cream.

              • Sounds yummy! Benny doesn’t even like cherries, so the choccie-colored cherries were basically for me and other family members who liked them. They have a wonderful fondant that forms as they age.

        • I am six and ten years younger than my older sisters, so in some ways I am like an only child. We are very close knit and while we’ve had our disagreements, I couldn’t imagine life without them.

I remember when Benny and I first married and living in South Dakota and money was short, we made fruitcakes for everyone for Christmas and I made some hand-crafted tree ornaments. We baked ahead of time and wrapped some of the cakes in cheesecloth soaked with brandy and others with grape juice for the teetotalers.

Benny has made some wonderful homemade chocolate-covered cherries on a couple of occasions. People who ordinarily don’t like the store-bought kind have raved over Benny’s.

          • Oh, I believe it! The man has a gift. The dark fruitcake recipe I have has come down through the generations, with each adding a distictive touch. However, it gets soaked in dark beer and liqueur for six weeks , so it’s not for teetotalers or children. It has been known to stay good for a year. A forgetful relative put hers in a kitchen cabinet, only to find it the following Christmas.

            • I have a recipe which I shared with a couple of fundraising cookbooks in the community for my mom’s fruitcake cookies. They use candied cherries and pineapple, pecans and several different spices. They smell wonderful when baking and are something many people who ordinarily don’t care for fruitcake really enjoy (and those that do, as well).

              • The Black Forest Cherry Cake yum,I have a couple recipes for it. One has a little kirsch with the cherries and the other one you soak the cherries in the kirsch first then pour the kirsch on the cake letting it soak in then put the cake together. Son 2 loves the second one the best just like he loves fruitcake and Christmas pudding. Last year for his reading and english class they studied A Christmas Carol and about Victorian Christmas traditions. I made a teetotaler fruitcake with marzipan and royal icing for the class of 40 (two teachers taught this class as a test to see if they where going to keep doing it that way) I know the teachers enjoyed the cake as well as some of the students. I think they where surprised that it was not like the store bought cake that are not that good. I have many different recipes for fruitcake and have made five of them so far. I can get the cherries and some of the fruit now, but the store that carries the candied peel don’t stock it till mid November. Last year I stocked up so I can make my cake sooner this year. The year that son 1 was born we had hardly any money so I made some toffee with chocolate and found out how easy it was to make and now make a few kinds each year. It also helps that son 3 has his birthday then.
