Thorin is hot–but have Bilbo and those elves been hitting the Botox?!?

Standard

I reblogged Perry’s post featuring the new Thorin poster from DoS (oh, heck, let’s look at it again, shall we?)

thorin-poster

And I have to say, after taking a look at the other posters, this one IS the undisputed winner. Richard Armitage as Thorin looks fierce, determined and absolutely gorgeous. *thud* The use of light and shadow playing over those majestic masculine features here is great.

However, some of the rest of the seven new posters . . . look suspiciously tweaked. Now, I know that Photoshopping is routinely done on images like this. But there’s touching up and there’s TOUCHING UP!!

Did Martin Freeman as Bilbo have an eye tuck somewhere along his unexpected journey? A shot or two of Botox? Touched up his hair color and picked up some colored contact lenses, too?

bilbo-poster

And maybe he got said Botox in Mirkwood, because even for a slow-to-age elf, Thrandy is looking amazingly smooth . . .   especially when compared with an un-retouched photo of Lee Pace.

If it weren’t for the long blonde wig, I am not sure I’d know this was Orlando Bloom at first glance.  I know he’s a decade older than when he made the LOTR films, and he’s supposed to actually be younger in these new films, not to mention that the guy playing his dad, Lee, is roughly the same age, but–does he not look a bit–plastic–here? I think the tinted contact lenses don’t really help. Weren’t his eyes brown in the original films or am I totally confused?

legolas poster

I thought he looked a bit odd in this screencap from the earlier teaser, too. I am really hoping Leggy will look a bit more–life-like–and less CGI-like–in the finished film. Otherwise, I will find it distracting, I fear. I mean, I know the elves are somewhat airy-fairy timeless sorts and all. But.

Richard and I, wondering what’s next?

Standard

Production on The Hobbit trilogy, in terms of filming, is steadily winding down; in recent days, many of the actors have tweeted and posted messages announcing they have wrapped on the project. Peter Jackson posted these photos and message today.

Tonight Martin Freeman finished his last shot as Bilbo Baggins. The end of an incredible two and a half years. I cannot imagine anyone else in this role – a character that Martin has nurtured and crafted with love and great skill.
We have… said goodbye to our elves, humans, wizards and now the hobbit. We now enter our final 2 weeks of pick-ups, and it’s wall to wall dwarves. These pick-ups have been gruelling and intense, but I’m so happy with what we’ve been shooting. These next two movies are going to be pretty great!

Benedict “Smaug” Cumberbatch checking out Martin’s Bilbo feet.
I look ahead to the day when the dwarves wrap and Richard, perhaps, makes a little speech on their behalf, and I feel myself getting all choked up. What an amazing journey it has been for these folks, cast and crew alike, and I can only imagine what an emotional moment that will be.

Richard in Thorin gear, posing with his favorite makeup artist, the talented Tami Lane. I think those two have established a firm friendship.
There’s got to be euphoric feelings; that sense of accomplishment, great pride in what you’ve created together, many wonderful memories of experiences shared. Mixed with those must be a certain sadness that it’s  largely over for the actors. (Plenty of post-production work to come, I am sure, by those busy beavers at the studio . . )
Yes, there will be the publicity juggernauts before the remaining films’ premieres and prior to the release of the DVDs, gatherings at Comic-Con and various fan events; still, it won’t be the same. It never is. Life moves on. Richard Armitage moves on.
What’s next? We know from Tweets today by Todd Garner and other involved with Black Sky, the film RA shot last summer in Michigan, that the film was screened last night. No release date yet, but it’s surely looking a lot more promising now.  Don’t know about you, but it can’t happen fast enough for me.

I am in a state of flux myself; still working to get the video production company established, trying to do my best to raise the profile and raise funds for our humane society and all the good it does in our county, maintaining my presence in Armitage World and attending to my pets and husband(who still hasn’t gone to the doctor, and the fever is BACK) and occasionally to this house, which looks like it was hit by the Black Sky tornado.  I now maintain/assist with four FB pages, a business website and blog, personal blog, have Twitter, Tumblr and Pinterest accounts, and am about to start rehabbing the Humane Society website.  If I kept up with all this properly, it would be a full-time job, I do believe. But (most of it) doesn’t pay too well. 😉

Now I have been invited to return on a part-time basis to my old newspaper to write a bi-monthly column and do some stringer reporting along the way as I am out and about. They want my name and face and words to be a presence there again; I don’t mind admitting I have missed it. And readers have told me I have been missed. And I will get paid.

I have also been trying to take better care of myself.

And this is true. I am done with diets. Been there, done there, lost lots of weight, gained it all back and a lot more. The extra pounds I am carrying are detrimental to my general health and wellbeing and they exacerbate my FMS, not to mention issues with blood pressure and my heart. I don’t need a quick fix or to follow some crash diet I cannot possibly maintain. I need to make sensible, permanent changes.

I’ve been following the DASH plan, which is designed to help lower blood pressure. I eat a lot less processed stuff, more fresh fruits and veggies, whole wheat breads, low-fat dairy, lean meats, watch the sugar, salt and fat consumption . . . nothing complicated. DASH isn’t a diet as such, yet I have already lost several pounds. I’ve been walking when the weather would allow it and doing some isometric exercises indoors. Overall, I feel better. I am in it for the long haul.

I don’t know exactly what is around the corner for me; good things, I hope. Better days ahead, I like to think.

I certainly don’t know what is to come for Richard Armitage. Another role in a blockbuster film, work in a smaller, more intimate indie, a return to television, to the stage, more voice-over work . . . only he knows. And he’s not telling.  But I don’t expect him to rest on his laurels for too long, that beautiful and talented workaholic.

Whatever paths he chooses on his journey, I wish him well. God bless you, RA. looking forward to seeing you in Black Sky whenever it does happen and to your return as the majestic Thorin in December.  Live your dreams and continue going from strength to strength, my dear fellow. Can’t wait to see what’s next for you!

Last night I watched “Snow White and the Huntsman.” What can I say, I liked the villain of the piece best of all–Charlize Theron as the mad evil Queen lusting after the heart of her stepdaughter to provide her with the immortal beauty and youth she craves. Snow White was OK, but I certainly am glad Bilbo beat her out for Best Hero. She just didn’t–inspire me.  I wasn’t particularly rooting for her.

As for Snow’s dwarves, well, they were a rather crotchety, crafty bunch, played by a cast of familiar Brit character actors given human dwarf bodies through the magic of CGI. Good performances, but they just weren’t Bilbo’s dwarves.  And not a Thorin amongst them to put inappropriate thoughts in a girl’s head.  They didn’t have his romantic mane of hair, his noble profile, his soulful, beautiful eyes, his deafening roar, his majesty. *sigh*

So, as more and more folks get their TH DVDs, the continued thudding, squeeing, drooling and sighing over  a certain vertically-challenged hottie takes place around the world. Wonder how many DVDs/Blu-rays have almost been paused and rewound and slo-moed to death already?

Did we ever think we’d feel this way about a sweaty, hairy, almost 200-year-old dwarf?  No, we didn’t. But we DO.

I found a few GIFs on Twitter I thought I would also share with you.  Oh, the joys of Thorin smiling!!

All Hail Our Hero Bilbo! (Snow Who??)

Yes, with more than 1.6 million votes cast in his favor, the Little Halfling Who Could beat out a certain fairytale character by a margin of more than 100,000 at the MTV Movie Awards Sunday night.

Above is the link to tORN’s article about the outcome of the battle.

“Congrats, my little friend! You are truly Hero of the Year!”

I missed the awards, but my understanding is the announcement of Best Hero was done in most underwhelming way, almost as if they planned to sneak it by the audience. No presentation of Golden Popcorn to someone in Martin’s stead, for example. One suspects if Ms. Stewart had won, there would have been considerably more ballyhoo.

Also interesting is the fact MTV solicited Twitter votes and yet failed to list Best Hero winner on their winners page online.  Honest oversight or something else? Inquiring minds sincerely want to know .. .

Someone on Twitter suggested that everyone with a Bilbo action figure send a twitpic with a trophy and speech and stage their own celebratory event. I like the idea–if I had a Little Bilbo, I would do it!

Although I began to experience a certain fatigue and had to take a few breaks, I enjoyed Tweeting a large number of votes for Bilbo. I was tossing in song references and silly poems; we were seeing quotes from Shakespeare and Tolkien and I believe I tossed in one from Dorothy Parker along the way. There were memes and fake recruitment posters and lots more coming in from all over the world. That little hobbit has a big fanbase, it would seem, and a very imaginative and clever one.

Again, congrats to Bilbo and his CReAtor, Martin–it’s good to see the little guy with the big heart end up on the winning side of things!  And come on, MTV–he won fair and square. Acknowledge this on your winner’s page, please!

Go Bil-Bo. Beat Snow-White (Clap-clap-clap-clap-clap!)

Standard

The MTV Movie Awards are Sunday night and one of our own–Martin Freeman, aka Bilbo Baggins of The Hobbit–is up for “Best Hero” against Batman, The Hulk, Catwoman, Ironman and Snow White aka Kristen Stewart.

bilbo

snowwhite

There are now over 1,000,000 votes EACH for the two top candidates, Bilbo and Snow White (the rest are far, far, far, far behind). Even though a lot of Twihards are talking about boycotting the awards show (the last Twilight movie only got one nod this year and they feel cheated) plenty of KS fans are voting for her.

Some have apparently threatened violence or have just been needlessly rude over the fact their choice isn’t trouncing all competition.  To this I have to say–come on, guys, let’s all play nice! We are kids at heart but we don’t have to behave like the worst of junior high days.

Maybe some KS fans just assumed she’d walk away with it. Ah, but they didn’t reckon with the power of the Tolkienistas, the Freemanians, Richardettes and the Hobbit Heads, did they? We can be a very determined bunch!

Me, I have always been one to pull for the little guy, the ordinary fellow, the unlikely hero, the dark horse. And I really want to see this particular little guy with big hairy feet and a willing heart win.  Go to the link below and cast your vote.

If you are on Twitter, you can also vote with every Tweet by adding #votebilbo to each message.  They are apparently only counting one hashtag per Tweet, so you can use the other characters to say something witty or profound if you wish.

As you can see, the ChaRACters and the CReAtor are also supporting this initiative:

He said, she said: A fan & non-fan see “The Hobbit” *SPOILERS*

Standard

It was a gloomy rain-soaked December afternoon in CA (Central Alabama), pretty much ideal weather to lose oneself in a film. And so my husband and I donned our green 3D glasses and watched the film I had long been awaiting–and, as it turned out, in HFR.

I know a lot of my fellow bloggers have been weighing in on their thoughts about The Hobbit after viewing it. I haven’t read most of them because I was waiting to see the film for myself.  Not wanting to be a broken record, I decided to do something that’s perhaps a bit different (I still haven’t read all those other reviews): share my viewpoint and my husband’s, the fan versus non-fan, if you will.

First, where each of us is coming from.

Angie’s POV: I first read The Lord of the Rings trilogy when I was 14 and I really loved it.I became immersed in that world.

I remember my sister bought me a LOTR calendar with beautiful artwork for Christmas and I kept it for years.  I didn’t read The Hobbit until I was an adult, although I do remember reading excerpts from it when I was in elementary school, in a storybook from our school library, featuring whimsical illustrations of Bilbo and the dwarves.

So,  I like Tolkien; I am a fan but definitely not an extreme one, just as I am a fan of Star Trek but not a Trekkie. I didn’t see the trilogy in theatres but waited and watched on satellite and I don’t own the DVDs. I’ve never had a desire to dress up as Galadriel or learn to speak Elvish or read LOTR fanfic, not that there’s anything wrong with any of that.  I simply save that level of obsession for Mr. Armitage.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

He said: In terms of sci-fi fantasy, I definitely prefer the science fiction part of it. I’m just not into wizards and Dungeons and Dragons type stuff. Doesn’t really interest me. I’ve never read any of Tolkien’s books, never seen the movies. I can’t say I’ve been particularly looking forward to this movie. But I know you are, so, hey.  Taking one for the team. Because I am that kind of guy.

(Discussion after watching the film)

She said: Thanks for bearing with me. I hope it wasn’t too unpleasant an experience for you. So, let’s get this out of the way– what did you like the least about the film? What scenes would you have changed, maybe deleted?

He said: Well, it was just too long. I think they could have tightened it up a lot. Not necessarily by deleting scenes, but just–shortening them. It’s sort of like, we’ve got all this great CGI and we’ve got this beautiful NZ landscape, let’s keep using it.  And the battle scenes started getting repetitive.

She said: Actually, I agree with you. It could have been tightened up in editing.  And the fighting did get repetitive after a while. Although I did enjoy that gorgeous NZ scenery quite a lot.  And seeing Richard wield a weapon and use it effectively, as opposed to what they did with him in RH, making Guy look a right numpty.

He said: Now they could have left out that whole first dwarf song as far as I’m concerned.

She said: *slightly concerned*  “Blunt the Knifes,” right, notMisty Mountains?”

He said: Yeah, yeah, the one at the table.  The other one was fine. They just dragged out the whole thing with the dwarves at Bilbo’s too long.

(She breathes a sigh of relief. Would have hated to argue Misty Mountains with him. One of HER favorite moments).

She said: You mentioned something back at the theatre about being confused about who was who and what and why . . . so you feel as if your lack of familiarity with the books/movies made it more difficult for you to follow the film?

He said: Yeah, even with that prologue with young Thorin and everything, I still felt a bit lost. I was getting all the trolls and orcs and goblins confused, and didn’t understand their place in Middle-Earth. And that–whatchamacallit with Gandalf and the elves–

She said: The White Council.

He said: Yeah, that. It just didn’t seem to add anything to my understanding of what was going on. It seemed like it was just stuck in there so you could have these characters from the original LOTR films to appease the people who loved them.

She said: What about the technology? The 3D, HFR, the CGI?

He said: Well, the 3D was definitely an improvement over what we saw in Captain America. But there were times when I really didn’t notice it that much one way or the other. The HFR–again, I couldn’t really tell a lot. My eyes were watering a little when the film was over but other than that, I didn’t notice any physical effects from it. The CGI–OK, there may have been too much of it at times, but it was very well done. Weta is really good, in some ways better than ILM (Industrial Light and Magic).

She said: I really liked this 3D much better than in CA. It actually did have a dimensional feeling to it. A few times I felt myself jump a little in my seat. In terms of the HFR–I didn’t seem to notice much blur in the movement in the action scenes. I liked that. I had a bit of a headache but I had one before the movie started, so I am not blaming that on the 3D HFR.  I think the CGI was excellent, too. Having seen the LOTR trilogy, I have to say Gollum is more realistic-looking than ever. Frightening and pitiable and comical all at the same time.

He said: The Riddles scene was good, but it was too long, too.

She said: I thought Martin and Andy gave strong performances there. I have to admit there were a couple of scenes that got me choked up a bit. When Bilbo reappears and Thorin asks why he did come back and Bilbo says it’s because the dwarves don’t have a home and he does. That got to me.

He said: (a tad sheepishly) Yeah, I have to admit what I liked best were those kinds of scenes. When Thorin’s telling Bilbo he’s never been so wrong and then gives him a big hug, that was an “awwwww” moment for me.

She said: Oh, me, too! We got to see Thorin smile and Richard doesn’t play a lot of roles where he smiles, so that was good to see. And Martin’s expression, feeling as if he’d finally been accepted. I loved that.

He said: The thing is–I thought the dwarves were pretty rude the way they invaded Bilbo’s house. I didn’t blame him for being upset. They seemed like jerks. I don’t think I really care whether they achieve their mission or not, to be honest.  I mean, they were just greedy, piling up all that gold. And then the dragon shows up. Sh*t happens. (pauses, smiles slyly) Of course, my favorite thing in the whole movie was the fabulous Richard Armitage . . .

She said: (smirking) OK, I know you’re just saying that to keep me happy. But he was good, you have to admit. I do miss his forehead–the crinkles, the furrows–but it’s amazing how much Richard can express through his eyes alone. You could read a lot about the character through those eyes.

He said: (Nods in agreement)

She said: I do sort of wonder if Sir Peter has a mancrush on Richard. All those close-ups, the noble profile, looking so majestic, so heroic–

He said: But he is the hero! I mean, at least until later in the other films, right?

She said: Yep, and then the gold lust takes over–although he does redeem himself. I did think they ended the film at a good point.

His overall rating for The Hobbit: “Some sort of B. Think it should have stayed two films instead of a trilogy, frankly.”

Her overall rating for The Hobbit: “B+. Strong performances, it’s visually stunning, RA was terrific as I expected–but I feel it was padded, too. Haven’t been won over to the HFR Club yet, either.  Sorry, Sir Peter.”

I do plan to see the movie again in 2D at my friendly hometown theatre on a nicer day weather-wise. I confess I was nervous on our drive to the theatre as I knew Benny was not, indeed, looking forward to the film and was only going to placate me.

I had this horrible fear he might absolutely hate it and I’d feel horrible I’d taken half of his only full day off each week to sit in a theatre and suffer. So things turned out better than I thought they might.  And it turns out we did see eye to eye on several points. I am sure I will have more to say after it marinates a while in my brain– and especially if I do go back on my own and see it in 2D.

First, here’s a beautiful copy direct from Warner Brothers of the promo featuring that tear-inducing hug between Bilbo and Thorin at the end.

Richard, you just keep outdoing yourself. You looked wonderful this morning in Toronto. Loved the look. Classic and classy, but with a contemporary vibe, too. A dapper English gentleman with style from the top of your handsome head to the tips of your well-shod toes.

In your interview on Marilyn Denis‘s show, you were relaxed, charming and playful. Loved the dip of the host–you do know how to make an entrance, don’t you, my dear boy?

I learned you like the word “serendipitous,” too. If the grey in your natural beard proved to be so, then my discovering you was just as serendipitous.

But what really, truly got to me was when you shared those kind words about your fandom and how supportive we are of you.
Of course we are supportive; with a classy gent who is so kind, thoughtful, modest, generous and gentle on top of all that talent and beauty, how could we not want to cheer you on every step of the way?

You give us so much through your portrayals, the way you give your characters breadth and depth and life. And you, yourself, are a gift. An extraordinarily gifted human being whose inner beauty keeps radiating out to illuminate our own lives.

Momentous Thorin & Co. Moments: A Middle-Earth Timeline

Standard

(Thanks to The Hobbit Tribute Magazine by Topix Media and writer Jan Sterling.)

In the Second Age of Middle-Earth~~

2770: Smaug the dragon descends on Erebor (the Lonely Mountain) and lays waste to the nearby town of Dale. The Dwarven King Thor escapes with Thrain II and Thorin II.

Young Thorin, a displaced prince after the attack by Smaug.

2850: Gandalf finds Thrain and receives the key and map of Erebor.

2941:  March 25~~ Gandalf and Thorin have a chance meeting at the Prancing Pony in Bree.

April 26~~ The Unexpected Party at Bilbo’s.

July 16~~The Company is captured by Goblins dwelling deep within the Misty Mountains.

July 17~~Bilbo is lost inside the Misty Mountain tunnels and stumbles upon the Ring.

July 19~~Bilbo encounters Gollum and narrowly escapes with his life (and the Ring) after besting the creature in a battle of wits.

A group of vicious Wargs traps the Company in the tops of some trees, but the adventurers are all saved by Giant Eagles (and this is likely where the first of the three movie ends).

Thorin high atop the trees in an effort to escape the nasty Wargs.

So, if Thorin is 200 years old at the time the film is set, would that make him in his late 30s when the attack by Smaug took place?

Thorin Thursday: What a Gorgeous Dwarf!

Damn, boy!

Damn! you’re a sexy dwarf!

A hottie dwarf!

Damn, you’re a gorgeous dwarf . . .

OK, so he’s a good half-foot shorter than I am. And very hairy. When compared to his age, I am practically jail bait.  And yet . . . oh, the allure.

Who needs Naomi or Miranda  or Gisele or one of those other supermodels when you have Hirsute Hotness Incarnate to grace the cover of your magazine?

Ladies and Gentlemen, I enter into evidence the photo above. *thud*

Even with Gandalf looming over him, Thorin still manages to look very regal and kingly–a fellow not to be trifled with.

I want to run my fingers through that mane of hair, stroke his beard, nibble on those delectable elfin ears . . .

What a magnificent beast! And the “pony” isn’t bad, either.

Undoubtedly, undeniably the Universe’s Hottest, Sexiest, Most Alluring Dwarf.

The Juggernaut Continues. Sir Peter is smiling somewhere.

Complete with lights and sounds.  I happened to mention I’d like to have one while Hubby and I were watching BBCA one Saturday night and hey presto–I got one. The kitties love it. I give them–CAT scans. (Sorry, couldn’t resist).

I really am just a kid in a grown-up body, after all.

Passion, Pride, Attitude: A media blogger’s view of RA as Thorin

Standard

Nadia pointed out a blog post at (A) musings last night that provides a blow-by-blow review, written by Kyle Pedley, of the latest Hobbit trailer. Pedley loves all things Tolkien and Peter Jackson, and was such a huge fan of the LoTR trilogy he was invited to the premiere of the final film by the UK distributors.

Here is the link to the entire article, which is quite lengthy but also quite interesting.

He made a lot of nice observations about Mr. Armitage, too.  Mr. Pedley, we like you. 😀

I have extracted comments specific to Richard and his performance as Thorin Oakenshield.  The underlining and highlighting are my additions.

(This passage references Thorin meeting Bilbo for the first time at Bag’s End)

In regards to Richard Armitage’s performance, he seems to
have nailed the regal pride of Thorin perfectly, and you can genuinely sense he
is not entirely convinced by the individual stood before him, almost bemused by
Bilbo. The doubt of Thorin and the dwarves is mentioned and touched upon in the
book but in the same light tone as much of the proceedings – it seems Jackson,
Walsh and the team are going to naturally take this a little further and, given
the arc Bilbo and Thorin go on together, this is entirely understandable and
will make for much more dramatic, involving and satisfying cinema

(Thorin delivering his rousing speech to the company around the table)

The conviction and almost ferocity of Armitage’s delivery really lends Thorin an air of danger, which will be key for the events to come in what will likely be the third film now. I just hope he is given some more pensive and personal moments, and again given the calibre of character work the team did with the Rings ensemble, I imagine this to be highly likely, especially now we are looking at a trilogy *angie’s note. I am hoping the same thing*
. I can already sense echoes of Boromir in Thorin, with his distrusting edge, pride and passion for his homeland, the inevitable parallels to the ring with his desire for the Arkenstone and outrage at Bilbo and his redemption in death. Like Boromir, I imagine some of his more tender moments may be exploring his genuine desire to reclaim his kingdom and avenge the wrongs put upon him and his people.

“WHAT OF IT?” – Again, more front and attitude from Thorin, and I’m pleased his pride is front and centre even to the likes of Elrond. I foresee him becoming quite a favourite with viewers, and Armitage to receive plenty of plaudits and praise for his performance.
(WHOOOO-HOOOOO!)
It’s definitely not just the besotted fangurlz who are impressed with RA as Thorin.  I am loving this appreciation and enthusiasm for his performance.
And you know what? My prediction is the same as Mr. Pedley’s.  😀
I did chuckle when the writer referred to Aidan as not being particularly “dwarfen” in appearance (he’s waiting to see him in scale before pronouncing final judgement), and Pedley’s assumption that Aidan and Dean as Thorin’s nephews are supposed to be the heart-throbs. Well, yes, that’s true, but . . .
Dear man, not only is Richard Armitage going to receive plaudits and praise for the performance, he’s also going to cause heart palpitations left, right and center.  Because that proud, regal alpha dwarf is HOT.
And now I am more excited than ever to see Thorin and Company on the big screen.

More activities are planned for Friday, including the Second Breakfast, and Saturday, when the combined Bilbo/Frodo birthday celebration is set (they were said to be born on the same day some 78 years apart).

In the meantime, let’s enjoy more of that sexy, resourceful, tough and tender hero named Sergeant John Porter, shall we? Remember, Superman wears JP pajamas . . .
