All good things . . . why do I feel like crying?

Standard
This is from Sir Peter’s FB page. Feel asleep early, then endured a painful night filled with strange dreams. Feeling melancholy today after a late start.
The last shot.
Big monitors, main unit. Small screens bottom right, splinter.
We’re neck and neck … Shooting our final shots at the same time. … 10.32 pm. 4 or 5 takes so far.
No, wait … Done! While I was typing this, we shot more takes and finished! Richard was fantastic. Splinter almost done. Minutes away.
Smiles and happiness… And sadness. Yikes, very sad.

As I’ve discussed elsewhere, it’s hard to bring something you’ve worked so hard and lovingly at creating to an end. I have a hard time saying goodbye to my extended fanfictions–did some of you ever think I’d finish “Truce”? Same thing with “Dangerous to Know.” Obviously, I didn’t want to do so.
All good things . . . it must be a very bittersweet time for Sir Peter, the cast and crew. Richard loved playing this character, that is clear. He loved talking about Thorin and the crafting of this unforgettable character. He’s invested so much of himself into it. Will it be a little hard to truly let go and move on?  I wonder.
Thank you, dearest Richard, and dear Sir Peter and everyone for all your hard work and dedication and sacrifice and talent. I am proud of you. And yes, I am a little sad.
At least Sir Peter had the faithful Mr. Smudge to provide him with furry solace.  Oh, gosh, that cat reminds me so much of Lucky with longer fur–now I feel like crying all over again.  What a day!

So I look at these photos with such a mixture of emotions . . . pride, happiness, sadness . . . curiosity as to what will come next for Richard and the rest. And will RA and PJ work together again? I truly hope so.

Don’t worry, Guyday Friday will still make an appearance here. It’s not often we come to the end of such an era . . .

Sir Peter, you know how to pique our interest . . . ;)

blogsirpeterFrom Sir Peter’s latest live blog entry at FB. Are those two penguins with a disco ball in that photo? Sir PJ isn’t saying . . .
Setting up our first shot.
9.15. Should be shooting soon. Two cameras, both with 16 mm lenses. Two huge wide shots of a fight happening on an enormous set that filling most of K Stage. This is going to be hard, posting pics without spoilers. I’ll do my best! We have video diary cameras here, so you will eventually see what we’re doing today in detail – but not until the Film 3 extended cut, which I guess will be towards the end of 2015!
We have a splinter unit also filming today, directed by Christian Rivers. … The day has a messy start, because the first couple of hours are going to be spent shooting stuff we were supposed to have finished yesterday. But because of the sheer complexity of the choreography, we worked late, and still didn’t finish.
The real problem is that we were supposed to be shooting in F Stage today, and splinter was to spend the day in K Stage. But we need a couple of hours in K to wrap up, and then we’re going to quickly shift to F, and carry on with our day. It’s forced the splinter unit to stay in A Stage shooting  green screen this morning, until we clear off K and let them in.
Too much detail! But this is the type of thing we’re always dealing with. I do have to get a Facebook filter quickly written, so Warner Bros doesn’t read that we didn’t get yesterday finished!
Hey, just spent so long writing this, we’ve just started shooting!!! Runs are on the board!
The photo: yes, we did actually just film this. Please don’t ask me to explain!  Let’s get that WB filter activated! Thank you Hannah and Dusty!
And from an earlier entry. PJ’s own kitty, Mr. Smudge, he waits to say goodbye to him each morning and greets him at the door each night.  You see, I KNEW I liked that hobbit-y, twinkly-eyed rumpled genius.

There should be some more interesting photos and info to come from Wellie . . .

Elves with the giggles: oh, Sir Peter, you sweetie

Sir Peter is being his usual loveable, mischievous self again and posting things like the video (see link above) featuring Evangeline, Orlando and Lee in costume reacting with great merriment to watching a video of two excited fans reacting to . . . watching a vid. It’s delightful!  Lots of great cheekbones and smile to enjoy here, too. 😉 Thanks, Sir Peter and the gang.

Not a great pic, but Pavlov’s dog will take what she can get.

wellie

This showed up in a Wellington newspaper today and PR Welly tweeted it and shared a scan of the page. I tried to improved the image quality but newsprint is newsprint.

Still, that is undoubtedly our tall, dark-haired, blue-eyed, bearded hunk of gorgeousness right behind the handsome Lee and Sir Peter (looking as endearingly scruffy as ever).  I recognize the black leather jacket and the blue shirt with the snap buttons, if my eyes (which aren’t great these days) are working correctly. Looking good, Mr. A!  Hope they had fun at the concert. Here’s the little article that went with the photo below:

I’d love for Sir Peter to direct an ep of Doctor Who. Love, love, love it. Even more would I love it if our RA could have a guest role on said ep. LOVE. *sigh*

Tolkien Week & My Early B-day Celebration

Standard

It’s been buzzing on Twitter today that Sir Peter has left a brief video (41 seconds) on his Facebook page marking the beginning of Tolkien Week and the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the publication of The Hobbit. Here’s a link to TORn’s story:

http://www.theonering.net/torwp/2012/09/16/61831-peter-jackson-kicks-off-tolkien-week/

PJ’s contribution to the celebration will be the debut of the eagerly-anticipated second trailer for TH, set for Wednesday, Sept. 19 (Ooooh. More Thorin, surely. Speaking, fighting, roaring, singing, riding? Can’t wait to see what’s there!) He’s also promising some other goodies for fans during this “exciting, interesting week.” Maybe more Thorin photos amongst them? *sigh*  Although, truthfully, I am having fun exploring all things hobbity these days.

Of course, Thorin’s Second Breakfast celebration is coming up Friday and a combined Bilbo/Frodo Birthday Bash is coming on the 26th of this month. And sandwiched in between all this is yours truly’s own birthday celebration on Sept. 25. I almost feel as if Sir Peter is helping me celebrate early this year!

Thanks, Sir Peter, for the early bday gifts this year. You are one swell guy. Wish I could give you a big bear hug. And ruffle your hair even more.

My copy of the movie tie-in version of The Hobbit, another early birthday gift, should arrive this week, too. Hoping for a few more new photos. Not that I am greedy or anything . . . may all of you have a wonderful Tolkien Week!

Yet more Hobbit tie-in books!

Standard

Yes, boys and girls, it could be a very Middle-Earth Christmas for many this year, between the movie itself and the books, action figures and other collectibles likely to be offered. The guys over at TheOneRing.net provided this article today detailing Harper Collins’ upcoming book tie-ins, including pictures of the five, count ’em, five covers.

http://www.theonering.net/torwp/2012/09/01/61399-harper-collins-releases-movie-tie-in-book-covers/

The Official Movie Guide and the Visual Companion appear to be geared to adults and promise such goodies as behind-the-scenes photos of principal cast members along with exclusive interviews and lots of color photos from the film. Squee!

For younger readers (and the young at heart) there is The World of Hobbits and the Movie Storybook, promising loads of photos from the film offering info on all things hobbit and and a retelling of the movie itself.

Below is a snippet of TORn article offering details of the book that I think will be the real piece de resistance for the artist inside . . . I am salivating slightly at the thought of it.

Then, on Friday December 14, the ultimate film companion book — Chronicles: Art & Design — will be released worldwide by HarperCollins (under the prestigious HarperDesign imprint in the USA)

Chronicles: Art & Design

This sumptuous book celebrates the creative vision of Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. It is packed with more than 1,000 images of concept artwork, photographs and development paintings by the artists working behind the scenes to bring Middle-earth to life, who each provide detailed and entertaining commentary that reveals the story behind the vision. Compiled by Weta Workshop senior concept designer Daniel Falconer, this is the first in a series of lavish hardback books written and designed by the award-winning team at Weta, who are working closely with the production team to guarantee that these books will be bursting with insider information and stunning visual imagery.

All five books are being published in multiple languages by many of Tolkien’s worldwide publishers, all released on the same dates, and we will to bring you more news about them as we get closer to publication.

Obviously, I have to find employment, organize a yard sale, sell a kidney or find some other lucrative means in order to finance my Thorin addiction, which has spread to all things Peter Jackson/The Hobbit. Oh, you knew what you were doing when you posted all those videoblogs, didn’t you, dear PJ?  Well, they do say you’re a genius . . .

Sir Peter’s latest vlog: my thoughts (part two)

Standard

Well, feeling better than I was earlier today, thank goodness. And I am thinking about Richard Armitage once more. I know. What a surprise.

I rewatched that last production vlog again earlier in anticipation of writing this second blog entry on it. Once again, I found myself thoroughly enjoying the entire thing. What an exciting journey it has been thus far! And how fortunate I feel to have the opportunity to be part of it thanks to Sir Peter’s efforts to share it with us.

The focus of this entry is to be Mr. A, but first I have to reiterate how much I admire and appreciate the infectious spirit of camaraderie and team work seen in the cast and crew of The Hobbit. I can only believe that is a positive work environment for all involved.

Something that particularly struck me on this viewing was Sir Peter’s expression of nerves on his way to Comic-Con. Of course, a tremendous amount rides on the reception of these films, yet the fact this celebrated genius of the cinema was so concerned about a positive outcome at an event which is largely fan-based touched me. The fans, as he said, are his kind of people, and he wants them to be pleased with what he’s doing.

Oh, and I must give a shout-out this time around to the charming T-shirts I actually noticed on first viewing (yes, I actually did catch things other than a certain hot dwarf and his Creator) for those working with second unit director, the multi-talented Andy Serkis: “Andy’s Flying Serkis.” Gotta love those!!

Now, on to RA.

He looks fantastic, doesn’t he?

A happy and healthy-looking Richard Armitage. I do find those flecks of grey in his beard quite endearing.

Of course, we all saw him looking quite relaxed and fit and truly gorgeous at Comic-Con. But this vlog gave us an opportunity to see more of him along the way—the sort of moments we saw so few of in earlier production vlogs.  There were amusing moments, breathtaking moments (he really is absolutely beautiful as Thorin), moments of quiet reflection and boisterous tomfoolery.

Some of my favorite RA moments:

Richard playing “footsy” with the other dwarfs in those great cumbersome boots.  I love him in jeans, of course, but we don’t see nearly enough of him in shorts IMHO.  Legs like those deserve to be showcased. And once more that dancer’s stance shines through.

Poetic Armitage. Like everyone else, his evocative comments about those early arrivals at Stone Street with the stars still shining in the sky struck a particular chord with me.  The man may have the profile of a king and the body of an Adonis, but he’s got the heart of a poet.

His ability to focus. The sense that he is “all there” and never slumming always strikes me. I love seeing these behind-the-scenes glimpses of Richard at work. Those azure eyes and elfin ears (rather more elfin than usual, even if he’s playing a dwarf) take it all in, don’t they?

Ah, that intent, focused gaze.

Younger Thorin? I do believe—judging by the attire and also the lack of grey hair here—this must be younger Thorin in battle. I see a hint of Sir Guy in his expression. I don’t know if it makes Sir Guy happy—I still avoid mentioning a certain warrior dwarf in his presence—but it makes me happy. And all the more eager to see younger and older Thorin on the big screen.

Leaping Armitage. It’s a “blink and you miss it” moment, but when in that one scene in which Martin is cutting up with the dwarfs you can just glimpse a tall, dark-haired fellow jumping in the air on the left side of the screen. I could only recall his Cats days—and smile.

Cheeky Armitage. He’s grown into a beautiful mature man but it’s fun to see the boyish, cheeky, flirty side of him peeping out at us. Sticking out his tongue at Graham MacTavish. Tossing that fish at Adam Brown.  Like others, I had worried somewhat that he might be so caught up in the angsty gravitas of Thorin he never really let his hair down.

Moments like these make me think he also knew how to kick back and be a cheeky monkey along the way.

I recall what the stuntmen on Strike Back said: “He’s one of us.” I suspect that is exactly how the crew felt about RA—the hard-working, good-natured, gentlemanly, down-to-earth fellow we all know and love- after working with him for a year and a half. And I do believe he has so many wonderful memories he will treasure for the rest of his life from his NZ odyssey.

And now with these continued speculations that a third film is not, in fact, out of consideration . . . so he may be spending more time Down Under.  Who knows? I just know I am now eagerly awaiting a post-production vlog from our friend Sir Peter . . .

http://www.theonering.net/torwp/2012/07/24/59777-la-times-third-hobbit-movie-may-be-coming-from-peter-jackson/

And, of course, news of sightings of Mr. A in the Midwest re the “tornado movie.”  I think these next few months are going to be very exciting for us all.
