Playing with images of RA (and specifically Guy) as a pirate reminded me of the wonderful pictures created by artist/illustrator N.C. Wyeth. An American artist who worked in the first half of the 20th century, Wyeth illustrated many, many classic tales from British and American literature–stories with brave knights, fair ladies, fierce dragons, bloodthirsty pirates and great ships with billowing sails–and chronicled the American West of yesteryear.
Wyeth’s son, Andrew and his grandson, Jamie, carried on the artistic heritage passed down to them. I don’t know if Richard is familiar with Wyeth’s work, but I can imagine him pouring over the artist’s vivid and detailed illustrations with pleasure as he read a favorite adventure tale . . .
I can imagine a young Richard Armitage daydreaming about the great adventures in the story books he loved–including that of a brave warrior dwarf . . .
I was talking with Heather on Twitter about my –erm-situation and I saw where RACentral had linked to those comments as well, so I just took a gander. “Going to be a gigantic star after these two movies.” “Does Richard Armitage own that role! He’s going to exemplify what it means to be a warrior dwarf.” “Bad-ass . . . hot dwarf!” As if we didn’t know, but it’s great to hear it all reaffirmed by the LOTR fanboyz and gurlz. 😀
Mmmmm, it confirms what WE knew all along really, doesn’t it, and these people seem to know their Hobbity stuff.
The words “Richard Armitage is going to be a gigantic star” give me goosebumps. This wonderful, gorgeous man deserves all the accolades that look set to come his way and they’ve started!
Yes, having read the entire article it’s obvious they get down to the brass tacks when discussing all things Tolkien. Which makes their comments all the more meaningful. I admit a giant internal squee occurred when I read that “gigantic star” bit.
Our opinion of Richard as Thorin might have been dismissed as that of just fans in the grip of Armitagemania, but as you say, when people who know their Tolkien make comments such as these, it’s much more meaningful.
Me, too. When he talked about being solitary as a child, up in his room reading, I thought of him taking these far-ranging voyages of imagination. If he didn’t already own my heart, he would then. I can fantasize about being his librarian…
Ahh a beautiful blue-eyed boy daydreaming about pirates and dragons… 🙂
I love imagining him as a child, enjoying his story books and playing pretend. I think he must have been a very loveable lad.
I adore Guy as a pirate! And the last pic… *swooooooooon*
Guy is a magnificent pirate. And Thorin is a magnificent dwarf.
I agree, Guy rocks the pirate look! Yummo!!
BTW I’ve just read the TORn staff notes on the EW photos, as linked at RANet. I am so proud of him I could burst. 🙂
